What traders should know about Black Friday
Black Friday is a scheduled early close on the NYSE holiday calendar every year. The opening bell rings at the normal 9:30 a.m. ET; the closing bell rings at 1:00 p.m. ET. Pre-market trading runs as usual from 4:00 a.m., and extended-hours trading also finishes earlier in the afternoon than on a normal day, so check your broker's cut-off.
The options exchanges close at 1:00 p.m. ET as well. The bond market keeps trading a little longer: SIFMA recommends a 2:00 p.m. ET close for US fixed income on the day after Thanksgiving.
It is reliably one of the thinnest sessions of the year. Many institutional desks are closed for the long weekend, so liquidity is light and spreads in smaller stocks are wider than normal. Retail-heavy names tied to holiday shopping often see outsized moves on the day's sales headlines.
