What traders should know about Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is the only exchange holiday that is followed by a half day. The NYSE and Nasdaq close entirely on Thursday, then open on Friday for a shortened session from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET. Options exchanges also close at 1:00 p.m., and SIFMA recommends a 2:00 p.m. ET close for the bond market.
The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is a full trading day. Volume tends to fade through the afternoon, and Friday's half session is usually one of the lowest-volume days of the year, which can exaggerate price moves in thin names.
Thanksgiving is always Thursday, so the dates are easy to predict: November 26, 2026; November 25, 2027; November 23, 2028. The early-close Fridays are November 27, 2026; November 26, 2027; and November 24, 2028.
