What traders should know about Christmas
The observed-date rule mirrors July 4: a Saturday Christmas is observed on Friday, December 24; a Sunday Christmas is observed on Monday, December 26; a weekday Christmas is the holiday itself. So the closures are Friday, December 25, 2026; Friday, December 24, 2027; and Monday, December 25, 2028.
Christmas Eve is a 1:00 p.m. ET early close whenever it is a trading day that precedes the holiday. Thursday, December 24, 2026 is a half day (1:15 p.m. for some index options). In 2027 December 24 is the observed holiday itself, so there is no half day, and in 2028 December 24 is a Sunday.
The week between Christmas and New Year's Day is a full set of trading days on the NYSE and Nasdaq, but volume runs at a fraction of normal. The bond market adds a 2:00 p.m. ET early close on December 24 and on December 31.
