Frequently asked questions
Will the stock market trade 24 hours in 2026?
Almost. Nasdaq starts 23-hour trading (23/5) on December 6, 2026: day session 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, night session 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET, Sunday night to Friday morning. NYSE Arca extends to 22 hours the same day. Prices still settle around the 9:30 a.m. open and the 4:00 p.m. close, which this page keeps calling the bell.
Is the stock market open today?
The status at the top of this page is computed from the official NYSE and Nasdaq calendar and the current time in New York. The regular session runs Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, except on the exchange holidays listed below.
What time does the stock market open and close?
The NYSE and Nasdaq open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Pre-market trading starts at 4:00 a.m. ET and after-hours trading runs until 8:00 p.m. ET. On scheduled early-close days the closing bell rings at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Is the stock market open on weekends?
No. The exchanges are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Futures reopen Sunday at 6:00 p.m. ET and the forex market at 5:00 p.m. ET.
How many stock market holidays are there in 2026?
Ten full-day closures: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day (observed July 3), Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are two early closes, on November 27 and December 24.
Is the stock market open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day?
Yes. Both are federal holidays, but the NYSE and Nasdaq trade a full session. The bond market is closed on both days.
What is an early close?
A scheduled half day. The exchanges open at the normal 9:30 a.m. ET and close at 1:00 p.m. ET instead of 4:00 p.m. In 2026 that happens on the day after Thanksgiving and on Christmas Eve.
Does the stock market close for lunch?
No. US exchanges trade continuously from the opening bell to the closing bell with no midday break, unlike some Asian exchanges.
Why is the status green or red?
The colour is the answer. While the regular session is open the status and the accents are green; once the closing bell has rung they turn red. Light and dark mode are yours to pick with the toggle in the header, or leave it on System to follow your device.
Not on the calendar, still asked about
Days people expect a closure. The market trades through all but one of them.
