What traders should know about Columbus Day

Columbus Day, also observed as Indigenous Peoples' Day, is the clearest example of a split holiday in US markets. Stocks and options trade normally. The bond market does not: SIFMA recommends a full close for US fixed income, so Treasury trading stops while equities keep going.

The reason is the banking system. Columbus Day is a federal holiday, so the Federal Reserve and most banks are closed and the Fedwire settlement system does not run. Bond trades cannot settle, so the dealers close; stock exchanges have never observed the day and simply carry settlement over to the next business day.

For traders the practical effect is a quieter equity session with no Treasury market to lean on, and stock trades from Friday and Monday that settle a day later than usual. Economic data releases are usually shifted off the holiday as well.
