What traders should know about New Year's Eve
Traders sometimes assume New Year's Eve is a half day like Christmas Eve. It is not. The NYSE and Nasdaq close at the normal 4:00 p.m. ET, and the 4:00 p.m. closing auction on December 31 sets the official year-end prices used for annual performance figures and index rebalances.
The bond market does close early: SIFMA recommends a 2:00 p.m. ET close for US fixed income on December 31, 2026. The last trading day of 2028 is Friday, December 29, because December 31, 2028 is a Sunday.
Volume on New Year's Eve is thin, particularly in the final hour, and the following day, New Year's Day, is a full exchange holiday. The next opening bell after December 31, 2026 is Monday, January 4, 2027, since January 1 is a Friday.
