The NYSE added Martin Luther King Jr. Day to its holiday calendar in 1998, making it one of the newer closures alongside Juneteenth. Because it is always a Monday, there is no observed-date confusion: the exchanges are simply closed from Friday's 4:00 p.m. close until Tuesday's 9:30 a.m. ET opening bell.
The Friday before MLK Day is a full trading day for stocks, options and bonds; there is no early close. Futures on CME Globex keep trading through the weekend on their normal Sunday evening reopen but run a reduced holiday schedule on the Monday itself.
Because MLK Day is also a federal holiday, banks and the Federal Reserve payment systems are closed, which is why the bond market takes the day off too. Settlement of Friday's stock trades slips to Tuesday.
