Is the Stock Market Open on New Year's Day?
No. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed on New Year's Day. It is the first exchange holiday of every year, and it is the one holiday with an unusual weekend rule.

What traders should know about New Year's Day
When January 1 falls on a weekday, the stock market is closed that day and reopens the next trading day at 9:30 a.m. ET. When January 1 falls on a Sunday, the exchanges close on Monday, January 2 instead, the same way they treat any Sunday holiday.
The odd one is Saturday. Federal offices observe a Saturday New Year's Day on the preceding Friday, but the NYSE does not: its holiday calendar explicitly states that no New Year's Day holiday is observed when January 1 is a Saturday, so Friday, December 31 is a full trading day. That is exactly what happens in 2028.
New Year's Eve itself is never an exchange holiday and is not an early-close day for stocks. On December 31 the NYSE and Nasdaq run a normal 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET session (the bond market, by contrast, closes early at 2:00 p.m. ET on SIFMA's recommendation). Expect thin volume in the last hour as desks square up for year end.
New Year's Day questions
Is the stock market open on New Year's Eve?
Yes. December 31 is a full trading day on the NYSE and Nasdaq, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, unless it falls on a weekend. Only the bond market closes early, at 2:00 p.m. ET.
What happens when New Year's Day is on a Saturday?
The exchanges do not take a day off. The NYSE calendar for 2028 notes that no New Year's Day holiday is observed because January 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so Friday, December 31, 2027 is a normal session.
When does the market reopen after New Year's Day?
At 9:30 a.m. ET on the next weekday. In 2026 that is Friday, January 2; in 2027 it is Monday, January 4.
