What traders should know about Good Friday

Good Friday has been on the NYSE holiday calendar for well over a century, a tradition that survived even though it never became a federal holiday. Because Easter moves with the lunar calendar, the date changes every year: April 3 in 2026, March 26 in 2027 and April 14 in 2028.

The oddity of Good Friday is the bond market. SIFMA does not always recommend a full close. When the Bureau of Labor Statistics schedules the monthly employment report for that Friday, as it does in 2026, SIFMA recommends that bond trading stay open until 12:00 p.m. ET so Treasuries can react to the data while stock traders are away.

Easter Monday is not a holiday in the United States. Unlike London, Frankfurt and most of Europe, the NYSE and Nasdaq open at the normal 9:30 a.m. ET on the Monday after Easter, which makes it one of the days when US markets trade while much of Europe is closed.

Good Friday questions

Is the stock market open on Easter Monday?

Yes. Easter Monday is a normal full trading day in the US, even though most European exchanges are closed.

Is the bond market open on Good Friday?

In 2026, yes, until 12:00 p.m. ET (SIFMA early close) because the jobs report is released that day. In other years SIFMA has recommended a full close, so check the year's schedule.

Why is the market closed on Good Friday if it is not a federal holiday?

It is a long-standing exchange tradition rather than a legal requirement. The NYSE has kept Good Friday on its holiday list since the 19th century.
