What traders should know about Memorial Day
The NYSE and Nasdaq close for the full day on Memorial Day and reopen Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. ET. There is no early close for stocks on the Friday before: the last session before the long weekend is a normal 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET day, although volume usually thins out after lunch.
The bond market is different. SIFMA recommends a 2:00 p.m. ET early close on the Friday before Memorial Day in addition to the full Monday closure, so Treasury desks go home early while the stock market is still open.
Memorial Day also marks the start of the period traders call the summer doldrums, when daily volume on US exchanges tends to run below the yearly average until Labor Day.
