What traders should know about Independence Day
The observed-date rule is simple: a Saturday July 4 is observed on Friday, July 3; a Sunday July 4 is observed on Monday, July 5; a weekday July 4 is the holiday itself. That is why the closure lands on a different date each of the next three years.
When July 3 is a trading day that precedes the holiday, the NYSE closes early at 1:00 p.m. ET. That applies in 2028, when Monday, July 3 is a 1:00 p.m. early close ahead of Tuesday's holiday. In 2026 there is no early close because July 3 is the holiday itself, and in 2027 July 3 is a Saturday.
The bond market follows the same observed date for its full close and adds a 2:00 p.m. ET early close on the preceding business day, July 2 in 2026. Expect the lightest volume of the summer around the holiday, with many desks thinly staffed for the whole week.
