What traders should know about Labor Day

Labor Day is a full-day closure for the NYSE, Nasdaq, the options exchanges and the bond market. The Friday before is a complete trading day with no early close, even though many traders leave early.

The Tuesday after Labor Day traditionally marks the return of full volume to US markets, and September is historically one of the more volatile months of the year, so the first full week after the holiday often sets the tone for the autumn.

Because it is a federal holiday, banks and the Federal Reserve are closed on the Monday, which pushes settlement of Friday's trades to Tuesday.
